When installing the barrel shroud onto an SMG receiver, it clocks to about 45 degree from aligned at hand tight. I don't expect I will be able to torque it enough for alignment. Would filing the mating surface of the shroud be the best approach to get it to clock correctly at a reasonable torque?

I had the same issue. I did indeed take enough off the shroud using a belt sander to get a correct fit up with out using excessive torque. It only took a few thousandths to make it work. As you have to drill and tap a new shroud set screw hole on the new rec its all good. Just be sure gas piston tube alignment is set before locking down its location.

I ended up taking a file to it last night and got it to work. Now I've got to fix the head spacing. Have you ever trimmed your locking flaps? I'm not sure of the best approach.

Yes, I used a set of proper head space gauges and rigged up a jig and a guide to hold and maintain the angle of contact on the flaps so that I could hand stone them to the correct engagement length for head spacing.
